VIP Lounge at Punta Cana Airport - Relaxing by the Pool

Here's my honest take on the VIP Lounge at Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). I visited the lounge during the Christmas holiday season, so it was crowded. The food is dismal, and guests are only permitted two alcoholic drinks per person.

🎯 First Impressions
We decided on the VIP Lounge near gate 16 because our flight was leaving at 7:10 PM from gate 18. We could easily see when boarding began and planned to leave the lounge at that point. Upon entering, we noticed a bartender serving drinks to enforce the two-alcoholic-drink limit.

👍 What I Actually Liked
The Space & Design
When we arrived, the lounge was quite busy, and with seating limited we ended up sharing a four-person seating area (not pictured) with another passenger already sitting across from us. The lounge itself isn’t particularly large, and we had clearly arrived during the peak rush.

One feature we really liked was the small outdoor kids’ playground. It’s a thoughtful addition for families, giving children a chance to get some fresh air and burn off some energy before settling in for a long flight.

Is That a Pool?
One standout feature is the outdoor patio with a small pool area. It gives the lounge a resort-like feel, and it is a nice place to get fresh air and unwind before boarding. That said, the patio can be noisy from nearby aircraft activity, and seating in that area fills up quickly during peak travel times.

The Staff & Service
The staff were friendly and helpful, and continually removed empty plates and cleared dishes from empty tables. They kept the food and beverage areas well-stocked and maintained cleanliness throughout the lounge.
The Amenities
The lounge offers free Wi-Fi with good connectivity, making it easy to work or stream content. There's also a separate section called the Owner's Lounge that was being used as an overflow room. That room had slightly better food options, and no one was monitoring the entrance.

👎 What Disappointed Me
Two-Drink Limit on Alcoholic Beverages

There was a two-drink limit on alcoholic beverages, including wine, beer, long drinks, and shots. I wasn't sure how they were keeping count of the number of drinks. No one handed out drink tickets to monitor drinks per person. Also, the alcohol selection did not include premium liquor, only off-brand or local options.
Dismal Food Options
The food selection was pretty underwhelming, both in variety and quality, but the moist lemon and chocolate cake was the one redeeming feature. The guacamole was a bit spicy but paired well with the corn chips. The rice was undercooked, and the fajita chicken was so dry it was basically begging for some sort of sauce.

🤔 The Reality Check
Who Should Actually Use This Lounge?
This lounge is good for ALL travelers from couples to groups to families with children.
Is It Worth Paying For?
Unless you’re planning to use the pool, this is not a lounge I’d recommend paying for. Entry costs $25 for children and $60 for adults, which feels hard to justify given the overall experience. The food selection was underwhelming, and alcoholic drinks are limited to just two per guest.
At best, this lounge might be worth around $25, and even then it would feel a bit steep. Ideally, children should be free considering the limited offerings.
For most travelers, you’d likely be better off spending that money at one of the airport restaurants instead. You could easily have a proper meal and drinks for far less than $60 per person. If you don’t already have complimentary access, or if your lounge pass charges $25 or more per person, it’s probably worth skipping this lounge altogether.
💡 My Honest Verdict
Rating: 2/5
The Bottom Line
The VIP Lounge at Punta Cana Airport is only worth it for the pool—food and drinks are underwhelming, so keep expectations low.
When to Visit
Best time to visit is any time of day from August to November.
Pro Tips from My Experience
- Best timing: Visit during low season (August - November) to avoid crowds; high season may require pre-booking
- Relax on the patio: If seating is available, relax near the pool if you don't mind smokers or loud noise from planes
- Food location: The food area is a bit of a walk from the main seating, so grab what you need in one trip
- Stay duration: Plan to stay 2-3 hours to get your money's worth, especially if you're paying for access
📋 Final Thoughts
I would NOT consider paying for this lounge based on the amount and variety of food and beverages. During the high season, I'm sure it would be wise to pre-book the lounge to avoid waiting in line.
