Plaza Mayor Lounge Review at Madrid Airport (MAD) - Priority Pass

Our August afternoon visit to Madrid's Plaza Mayor lounge was a mix of a crowded main room and a more relaxed overflow area. We visited on August 13, 2026, at around 4:00 PM with Priority Pass. The buffet was regularly replenished, and the quieter overflow area gave us extra room. The lounge serves passengers traveling within the Schengen area, with entry timing rules that differ for departing and connecting passengers.

🎯 First Impressions
The lounge was very crowded when we arrived. Fortunately, there was a separate room with additional seating, so we found seats on the other side. Drinks included wine, beer, sodas, and fresh-squeezed orange juice. The spirits selection was in the main area, so we had to walk back when we wanted something a bit stronger.

👍 What I Actually Liked
An Additional Room When the Lounge Was Busy
Although the main area was crowded, the separate room gave us more room to sit. It had its own food and drink selection, including wine, beer, sodas, and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Spirits were in the main area, so we had to walk back and forth when we wanted something stronger. Even so, having extra seating was helpful.
Food and Drinks in the Main Area
The lounge has a main area and an overflow area. The main area had the larger food selection. During our stay of a little over three hours, the hot dishes changed several times. There was also a salad bar with a variety of toppings, including eggs, green and black olives, cucumbers, and tomatoes, along with fruit, bread, and desserts that weren't available in the overflow area.
I was surprised to find a case of individually wrapped snacks, including sandwiches, bagels, yogurt, and other items to take outside the lounge.

Food and Drinks in the Overflow Area
The overflow area was less crowded and had more room, so I would recommend checking it out if you don't mind walking between sections. It also had hot food, sometimes the same dishes as in the main area. With fewer people serving themselves there, the food was less picked over. Fresh-squeezed orange juice was available only in this section, which was a nice touch compared with the usual pre-processed juice. There were also two large soup canisters that weren't available in the main area.

👎 What Disappointed Me
Crowding
The lounge was very crowded during our visit. We were able to use the separate room, but the crowding still affected where we could sit and what was available in that area.
Drinks and Restrooms
With so many passengers using the lounge, some drinks in the main-area refrigerator weren't cold. The restrooms also needed more frequent attention: some stalls were out of toilet paper, and once there was a line for the women's restroom.
🤔 The Reality Check
Who Should Use This Lounge?
This lounge may be useful if you're traveling within the Schengen area from Terminal 4 and have eligible access. Be prepared for crowds, particularly if you visit around the time we did. I would even consider paying to use this lounge for the hot food, which was replenished regularly, and the variety of beverages.
Entry Rules to Know Before You Go
The lounge's posted rules state that entry is not allowed more than three hours before departure and that only one guest is allowed. If you're connecting to another EU country, you can enter up to four hours before your flight.
💡 My Honest Verdict
The Bottom Line
The food was constantly replenished, and the separate overflow area offered a little more space with less crowding and noise. If you don't mind walking past the bathrooms, I'd recommend sitting there. Check the entry rules before you go, and be prepared for the main lounge area to be busy.
Pro Tips from My Experience
- Check your itinerary: This lounge is for passengers traveling within the Schengen area.
- Plan your arrival time: Entry is limited to three hours before departure, or four hours before departure if you're connecting to another EU country.
- Guest access: The posted rules state that only one guest is allowed.
- Take it to-go: I rarely see pre-packaged food available in the lounge but it's an option if you need something on the go.
